This Voice from the cloud seems to be articulating these very words, making the point that this long-awaited Prophetthe Messiah is here. (1-2) Jesus calls them and sends them forth. More importantly, it marked a renewal of Gods covenant with Israel. Everything was easy for him. But as Matt talked about last week, theres a bit of mystery here. Here we have Jesus at the top of the mountain being transfigured, receiving the visits of Moses and Elijah and they are talking Continue I love Peter. With no human or earthly voices available to encourage Jesus, his Father steps in to provide new voices in the conversation. Jesus glorified like the sun. Or they find Jesus rhetoric merely baffling and bewildering (see what happens in Luke 9:45 after another direct prediction of betrayal). The first step to such a prayer is stillness and silence, or what should have been Peters response on the mountain. And there is more to it than simply an unforgettable moment. Now, were tempted simply to think of this as a Kodak moment, one youd like to hold on to, that Peter was simply trying to concretize the experience and preserve it for all time. Now, lets think about that for just a moment. They answered, John the Baptizer, but others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again. Jesus asked, But who do you say that I am? The story ends with the self-imposed silence (9:36), whereas in the parallels it is Jesus who commands the three disciples to be silent (Mark 9:9//Matthew 17:9). Its the kind of thing a loving Father does for his beloved Son. Its still there today in the church if only we dont just sleep through it. An event like this has only a few parallels. So often we read incidents like this one in the Bible and we rarify them, put them up on a pedestal, and assume that if such a thing were to happen today and to us, it would change the world and shake up everything. He is glorious in power and light and majesty and holiness. Listen to him! There is a sermon in these words. This word, exodon, provides another parallel with Moses, who led the Exodus from Egypt. The Greek term translated as departure is exodus (exodus in English). This is my beloved Son. To me, it matches the magnitude of the stories of Christs birth (which weve looked at in the past couple of weeks) and the resurrection. They were to do this that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. Luke says, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem. (9:51). Each of the Synoptic Gospels contains an account of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9//Mark 9:2-10 //Luke 9:28-36). But how could anyone be drowsy, even briefly, when such a spectacle was right in front of them? They are left with Jesus and silence. he took Peter, and John, and James; the same that he admitted to be with him at the raising of Jairus's daughter, and in the garden afterwards: and went up into a mountain to pray; to his God and Father, that his disciples might have a visible display of his glory, as an emblem and pledge of that in which he shall hereafter appear: it was usual with Christ to go up into a mountain to pray; Matthew 14:23. That exodus can only happen in accord with what Jesus himself had predicted when he said, just prior to this story, that he must suffer, be killed, and be raised on the third day (9:22). No, not exactly on a par with what happened to Jesus but still . Those who are wise shall shine as the brightness of the expanse; Later, at Jesus ascension, a cloud will take Jesus out of their sight (Acts 1:9also written by Luke). The face of the man walking with his child in the park, of a woman baking bread, of sometimes even the most unlikely person listen to a concert or standing barefoot in the sand watching the waves roll in, or just have a beer at a Saturday baseball game in July.
